The SPP2311 Validation Workshop “Basic Biomechanics and Biomechanical Methods for the Validation of Numerical Simulations” took place from November 26–28, 2025 at the Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics, Ulm University.
The workshop brought together 14 in-person and 2 online participants and aimed to train and sensitize PhD students and postdocs working on numerical simulations within SPP2311 to experimental validation approaches in biomechanics. The three-day program combined lectures and extensive hands-on laboratory sessions. The first day featured introductory talks on validation and the fundamentals of biomechanics, concluding with an informal get-together. The second day covered key measurement techniques and advanced validation concepts, including a comprehensive laboratory block with multiple experimental stations for hard- and soft-tissue biomechanical testing, as well as knee- and spine-related setups. The third day continued with four laboratory stations, concluding with a final lecture. Overall, the workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with participants particularly valuing the practical laboratory components and the strong linkage between experimental methods and validation needs in numerical simulation workflows.
Overall, this event proved to be a highly successful networking event with participants engaging in a lively exchange. The members appreciated to connect, collaborate and strengthen the SPP2311 community.
